Why Tallow? | Traditional Skincare

There's something quietly radical about going back to basics.

The Tallow & Thyme Company was born from a simple belief — that the best ingredients for your skin are the ones nature already made. Before synthetic moisturisers, before preservatives and fillers, people used tallow. And for good reason.

Tallow from grass-fed cattle shares a remarkably similar fatty acid profile to human skin. It absorbs effortlessly, nourishes deeply, and works with your skin rather than sitting on top of it. No clogged pores. No mystery ingredients. Just real, traditional care.

We make every balm by hand in small batches in South Devon, using organic grass-fed beef tallow, organic jojoba oil, organic beeswax, and carefully chosen botanicals. Nothing more than your skin needs. Nothing less than it deserves.

Whether you're new to tallow or returning to something you've always known worked — welcome.

Rooted in Tradition. Made by Hand.

Simple skincare, rooted in tradition

Before skincare became complicated, people used carefully rendered animal fats, plant oils, waxes and herbs to condition and protect their skin.

Tallow is a traditional skincare ingredient made from purified beef fat. Its naturally rich texture helps soften the skin and reduce moisture loss, making it particularly useful on areas that feel dry, tight or weather-exposed.

Why does tallow work well in a balm?

Tallow contains fatty acids including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids. It is not the same as human sebum, but its rich lipid profile gives it a smooth, conditioning feel and creates a protective layer that helps hold in moisture.

Simple ingredients, chosen with purpose

Our formulations centre around organic grass-fed tallow and use carefully chosen ingredients such as organic jojoba oil, organic white beeswax, vitamin E, botanicals and essential oils, depending on the product.

Each ingredient has a purpose, and the full ingredient list is shown clearly on every product page.

Handmade in South Devon

Every balm is handmade in small batches so we can pay close attention to its texture, aroma and finish. Natural ingredients can vary slightly in colour, texture and scent; that is part of their small-batch character.

Waterless and concentrated

Because our balms contain no added water, only a small amount is needed. Warm a little between clean fingertips and gently massage onto clean, dry skin. Use on hands, cuticles, elbows, knees, feet or other dry-feeling areas of the face and body.

For external use only. Patch test before first use if your skin is particularly sensitive.
